Intensity Dependent Emittance-exchange in a High Intensity Proton Synchrotron
نویسندگان
چکیده
The acceptance of the KEK booster has large side value (272 π mm mrad in the horizontal plane and 61π mm mrad in the vertical plane). To increase the beam intensity we have been trying to achieve painting injection in the horizontal plane. The intensity-dependent emittanceexchanges in the horizontal and vertical plane were measured by a method using a scraper and bump magnets method. In order to clarify the experimental results, multiparticle tracking was performed with self-consistent space-charge forces. The experimental and simulation results imply that a space-charge potential of a beaminduced coupling exists between the horizontal and vertical planes.

A benchmarking experiment with a high intensity bunched beam stored for 1.2 s in a nonlinear lattice has been performed at the CERN Proton Synchrotron (PS). Beam emittance and beam intensity have been measured for several working points at different distances from a lattice-induced resonance. We found a regime of emittance growth for machine tunes far from the resonance and a regime of emittanc...

For Run II, 36 by 36 proton and antiproton bunches will be collided in the Tevatron during accelerator operations. The probability of successful collisions is dependent on the luminosity levels achieved during the acceleration cycles. Longitudinal emittance, a measure of the phase-space area occupied by the particles in an rf bucket, directly affects luminosity. As a result, diagnosing and elim...

The beam transverse emittance control and preservation in all the acceleration chain from the proton source to the 7TeV colliding beams is fundamental for ensuring high luminosity runs at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). This paper aims at discussing the emittance measurement methods and present status in the acceleration stages from the Proton Synchrotron Booster (PSB) injection at p=50Me...

Since 2003, single bunches of protons with high intensity (~ 1.2 10 protons) and low longitudinal emittance (~ 0.2 eVs) have been observed to suffer from heavy losses in less than one synchrotron period after injection at 26 GeV/c in the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) when the vertical chromaticity is corrected (ξy ~ 0). Understanding the mechanisms underlying this instability is crucial t...
متن کاملCollective effects in a diffraction-limited storage ring.
This paper gives an overview of collective effects that are likely to appear and possibly limit the performance in a diffraction-limited storage ring (DLSR) that stores a high-intensity ultra-low-emittance beam. Beam instabilities and other intensity-dependent effects that may significantly impact the machine performance are covered. The latter include beam-induced machine heating, Touschek sca...
